Police crack down on lockdown violators, detain as many as 227 in Imphal for not wearing face masks in public, not maintaining social distancing

Imphal: As Manipur announced the second series of lockdown due to spiralling COVID-19 cases, stringent curfew rules have been enforced across the entire state starting Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, the police department cracked down on lockdown violators and detained as many as 227 persons in Imphal for not wearing face masks in public and not maintaining social distancing, as per the guidelines laid down by the government to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus in the state.

Later, the detainees were released and a sum of Rs 8,100 collected as penalty, as per law.

The police department warned those who violate the lockdown shall be dealt with strong legal action under the National Disaster Management Act, 2005 and appropriate laws, said in the statement.

Earlier, chief minister N Biren Singh had also infirmed that those returnees violating quarantine rules and guidelines would be fined Rs 1,000 on each occasion.

Moreover, failures of wearing face masks, maintain social distancing in public places and consumption of pan and tobacco would have to pay a penalty fine of Rs 200.

Those spitting in public places and any persons violating various lockdown and curfew guidelines issued by the government will have to pay Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, respectively as fines.

An amount of Rs 10,000 would be fine for any gathering over an authorised number of persons on any kind of ceremonies or events in the state, it said.
