133 samples of Assam Rifles personnel tested at Jiribam district hospital, of which 17 found positive for COVID-19
Imphal: At least 17 security personnel were among the 90 who tested positive for COVID-19 in Manipur on Tuesday. All the 17 belong to 37 Assam Rifles Garrison at Kadambala in Jiribam district, the first such case from AR in the district.
According to Jiribam deputy commissioner W Malemnganba Chenglei, as many as 133 samples for Assam Rifles personnel were tested at the district hospital, of which 17 were found positive for COVID-19.
As per official report, of the 17 personnel of Assam Rifles, eight were staying at the quarantine centre which is located inside the camp.
Subsequently, the district magistrate has issued an order and declared 37 AR Garrison Kadambala areas as containment zone.
The area includes PGCIL complex in the north, Nullah inside the garrison in the south, Kadambala garrison wall in the east and PGCIL accommodation in the west.
Any person or institution found violating any of these containment measures shall be deemed to have committed an offence punishable under section 188 of Indian Penal Code and Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, said DC Chenglei.
Earlier, as many as 41 policemen stationed at Jiribam Police Station and VDF personnel deployed at Jiribam railway station were tested positive and many are reported to have recovered after undergoing treatment in Imphal.
On July 14, three CRPF personnel of 87 CRPF Battalion in Jiribam also tested positive for the coronavirus.
The first case of police personnel exposed to the virus was reported when an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Jiribam Police station on June 30. He had a travel history to Silchar in Assam.
