Shillong: Important issues were raised and suggestions given by the opposition during a meeting that was held with the Meghalaya government on Thursday concerning the COVID situation.

A third meeting convened by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh saw the participation of a few MLAs since health protocols had to be adhered to.

While addressing the media, MLA HM Shangpliang lauded the government for their efforts and how new ideas and initiative steps were taken by the government.

However, Shangpliang informed that few suggestions were made to the government concerning the COVID crisis in the state. The suggestions made by the opposition were that the government should contain the movement of people across the state.

Shangpliang said that they had requested that inter-state movement for people coming from Assam or for people from Meghalaya going to Assam should be stopped for the time being except for emergencies where the government may have to verify and examine more thoroughly to allow such people to come in or go out.

The government replied that for some time now they have stopped such movements. He added that no such permissions should be given to people who want to come back to Meghalaya from outside the state.

Another suggestion made by the opposition was that issue of transit movement of goods vehicle.

Since Meghalaya is a highway which transits vehicle from Assam or to Manipur, Tripura or Mizoram going via Meghalaya, hence the issue was raised to the government to ensure that these vehicles that move along the highway via Meghalaya should not stop anywhere on the road or stop at any dhabas along the highway.

Shangplaing informed that concerning this government has replied that they have already issued an instruction to all dhabas along the highway to be closed.

“We have suggested the government when such a situation arises that a case is detected we requested that they should inform the identity of such people or to let the local authorities know about such a patient or such a case. Otherwise it creates a lot of confusion or chaos among the people. Government has responded that they have gone ahead by giving away the names to dorbar shnongs of such people who have got high risk contacts,” said Shangpliang.

Concerning the presentation given by the Chief Secretary on sooner or later behaviour change will have to be brought in the minds of the people. Shangpliang said that this should be done gradually and not in a manner where people will not accept.

“In view of the results of HSSLC that has been declared we are aware that most of the students won’t be able to go out to study. I have made a request to the chief minister and education minister that opportunities should be explored and the students should be given an opportunity to study in the state,” said Shangpliang.

He added that since we know that students who want to pursue engineering line or medical line outside of the state is next to impossible in the current year and therefore a suggestion was made to the government to examine so that each students who aspires to go for further studies may be given that kind of opportunity.
