Tripura govt sets target of 2.10 lakh COVID-19 tests by August end

Agartala: In a move to contain the outbreak of coronavirus, Tripura government has set a target of testing over 2 lakh samples for COVID-19 in the next one month, said law minister Ratan Lal Nath.

Speaking with reporters, Nath said that a total of 7,000 tests would be conducted each day using antigen testing kits and full strength of RT-PCR machines in the state. In the next one month, over 2.10 lakh samples would be tested in the state.

“Tripura has 116 Primary Health Centre (PHC) and 22 Community Health Centre (CHC) in addition with all the sub-divisional and district hospitals. In each PHC and CHC, 25 persons will be tested by antigen kits, while 5 samples will be collected for RT-PCR test. More than 4,000 tests will be done each day in these PHCs and CHCs located across the state,” Nath said.

He also said that around 600 passengers travelling in the state, their samples are being tested by RT-PCR and samples of those entering from Churaibari check post in Tripura-Assam border are being tested by point antigen testing kits.

“From now on all the patients before getting admitted indoors would be tested for COVID-19 by antigen testing kits. Random testing would be done for vulnerable groups like persons living in the border areas, helpers, drivers, industrial workers and testing purpose has been arranged”, Nath said.

A total of 10 lab technicians would be engaged in seven districts, while 12 in North district in addition to the present strength to test the samples for COVID-19.

“The present testing capacity of 2,000 will be used and sufficient numbers of samples will be brought from the field. Presently there are four machines in the virology lab, while Two more machines have arrived and one would be dispatched soon”, Nath added.

The state government has selected three locations—Tripura medical college in West district, Dharmanagar in North district and Udaipur in Gomati district for setting up the RT-PCR machines.

He also said that the results of the test would be made available by the lab two times in a day. The number of containment zones has also increased to 59 in the state.

Meanwhile, during the ongoing lockdown period amidst restrictions, the district magistrates have given permission for 1,060 marriage ceremonies and 390 permissions for funerals across all eight districts.

The state government has also announced that a week-long ‘total lockdown’ will remain in force in 1-km radius of Indo-Bangla border in rural areas and within half a km in urban from July 17.

The district administration will demarcate the areas of lockdown and put markers of easy identification so that people from outside get to know the lockdown prevailing in the area.
