Imphal: To prevent spread of COVID-19 in Manipur, education minister Thokchom Radheshyam on Saturday carried out a cleanliness drive at the Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) campus, which is now a cluster university of five colleges, while maintaining social distancing.

According to minister Radheshyam, the cleanliness drive has been planned to pave the way to welcome the students back to the campus when the lockdown is lifted by the government.

The number of positive cases in the state is rising as many returnees are still coming back to the state and once the returnees coming back are over, the condition may become favourable for the lockdown to be lifted, he said.

The minister also expressed that the decision for the cleanliness drive was taken during a meeting as a part of Swachh Bharat to start the campus cleaning and keep it ready for the opening when the time comes.

“Such drive will make the young minds realise the importance of involvement and participation in keeping our society neat and clean. Moreover, the students should regard the institutions as their own and protect the property,” said minister Radheshyam.

Organised by the DM University, the cleanliness programme cum social services was held in all higher educational institutions and offices located within the premises of the DM University, including the DM Community College, DM College Teacher Training College, Hindi Teachers Training College, LMS Law College, G. P. Women’s college and the Education (S) Engineering Wing office.

Since the lockdown of the educational institutions in March due to COVID-19 pandemic, there has been no activity taking place in the institutes so far.

The drive were also participated by commissioner of higher & technical education, M Harekrishna, registrar of Dhanamanjuri University Dr Nivedita Lairenlakpam along with principals of the colleges, officials concerned of the Dhanamanjuri University, teaching staffs and students.
