Assam: Spurt in COVID-19 cases in Dibrugarh; week-long lockdown in Jorhat

Tinsukia: Nine new COVID-19 cases have been detected in Dibrugarh district in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally of positive cases in the district in upper Assam to 237.

The development comes two days after 12 nuns including domestic help of VG community hospital, all primary contacts of a sister of the hospital, tested positive for COVID-19. The sister, having travel history to Guwahati, tested positive on July 3.

According to sources, on Tuesday, six cases were reported, including four laboratory technicians of Assam Medical College and Hospital, a hotel staff of the quarantine centre where the lab technician were quarantined, and one person from Jokai having no travel history. "The laboratory technicians were staying in an isolated facility,” sources said.

"On Monday, three cases of COVID-19 were reported in the district including a laboratory technician engaged in fever clinic of AMCH and two field cases," the sources said, adding that one of the field cases is of a woman police constable engaged in duty at the Judicial Court in Dibrugarh."

In Tinsukia, a resident of Manav Kalyan Namghar Road tested positive of COVID-19 on Sunday night taking the total tally to above 270 cases. The youth, an interior designer, who had settled in Guwahati a year ago, had come for some professional work and was staying at his parents’ home, sources informed this correspondent.

A source in the health department said that the patient has been shifted to civil hospital and contact tracing exercise has begun.

Meanwhile, the Jorhat district administration has declared a week-long total lockdown in the areas under Jorhat Municipal Board from 7pm of July 9.

Earlier, Jorhat administration had issued order an order on July 3 restricting the time to open shops, with areas and side of the roads divided into two shifts. The order was aimed at reducing traffic and crowd.
