Imphal: A policeman was among six persons who tested positive for COVID-19 in Ukhrul district on Wednesday, the second case from the department testing positive for the coronavirus in Manipur.

Earlier, an assistant sub-inspector who was deployed to monitor returnees by trains at Jiribam railway station and who has a travel history to Silchar in Assam, had tested positive for COVID-19 in Manipur.

This is also the second case of a person testing positive for novel coronavirus in the hill district with no travel history.

According to Ukhrul district chief medical officer Dr Kapangring AS, the sample of the policeman, who was posted at Ukhrul Hr Secondary School quarantine centre, was collected on June 29 after he showed symptoms of the virus.

The said quarantine centre in the district headquarters has already been declared containment zone thrice after inmates were found exposed to the virus.

“I have raised concern with the containment management for this particular centre since many people being quarantined at the centre have tested positive for COVID-19,“ said the CMO.

As per the health official, the policeman is now being kept at an isolation ward at district hospital since he has severe cough, a symptomatic case.

Moreover, two other policemen who were on duty with the patient have been traced as primary contacts and kept at isolation ward as a preventive measure.

Their samples were sent to Imphal on Thursday and the result is likely to be received on Friday, added the chief medical officer.

Secondary contact tracing to outside the police forces will follow suit as per the test results, it said.

At present, a total of 1,279 cases habe been confirmed in Manipur, with numbers of active and recovered cases standing at 663 and 616, respectively.

The recovery rate is 48.16 per cent in the state so far.
