COVID-19: Strict 14-day lockdown in Guwahati from Sunday midnight

This time, lockdown in Guwahati will be stricter than nationwide Lockdown 1, as no grocery shops, vegetable vendors, etc, will be open, except for medical services, at least for first 7 days

Guwahati: In a bid to contain the COVID-19 outbreak in Guwahati, Assam government has decided to impose a 14-day total lockdown in the city effective from Sunday midnight.

Addressing a press conference, state health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the lockdown comes in place as a substantial number of COVID-19 cases are being reported from the city.

This lockdown will be even stricter than the nationwide Lockdown 1, as no commercial establishments, grocery shops, vegetable vendors or any kind of services will be allowed to open, except for pharmacies and hospitals.

As for opening of grocery shops and vegetable shops, etc, a review will be held after first seven days.

Also, 7 pm to 7 am curfew is now being imposed acrosse across the state, effective Friday (June 26), informed the minister.

Since June 15, when the health department started the Assam Targeted Surveillance Program, 762 persons have tested positive for the highly contagious virus. Of the 276 persons found positive on Thursday, 133 were from Guwahati alone.

Earlier, on the basis of cases detected from areas, a phase-wise 14-day lockdown was imposed in 11 wards of Guwahati Municipal Corporaration (GMC).
