Senapati: After 24 hours of indefinite hunger strike, inmates at Mt Everest institutional quarantine centre in Senapati district of Manipur called off their agitation on Thursday after their fellow inmate tested negative for COVID-19.

"We, the Mt Everest College Senapati quarantinees, suspended our hunger strike effectively and immediately from 5:45 pm on June 25. Our endless gratitude to our SDO, doctors in-charge, DC, many concerned CSOs and all of you who stood with us and our plight in expediting our result," said the statement.

On Wednesday, as many as 65 Delhi returnees quarantined at the centre had announced an indefinite hunger strike demanding immediate declaration of the COVID-19 test result of one of the inmates.

They denounced to consume any food being provided by the district administration till the test result of the one remaining inmates was declared.

Speaking with EastMojo earlier, one of the inmates informed that medical officials mishandled the sample of one of the inmates and not rectified immediately after the sample was broken before it tested.

It was only after they persistently enquired and learnt about the sample being grossly mishandled by the medical officials, the sample was recollected on June 24 for the single remaining inmate, the inmate said.

Apart from the one individual, all the other inmates were tested negative but since the centre was declared containment earlier after one of them tested positive on June 8, inmates were compelled to remain at the centre until all tested negative as per the containment protocol.

With the latest development, all the inmates will be leaving for their respective places either for community quarantine centre or home quarantine on Friday, the inmate said.
