Sikkim: 5 new COVID-19 cases detected, total tally soars to 67

Among the new cases, 2 are from East Sikkim & 3 from West Sikkim. All of them were in facility quarantine centres & are reported to be asymptomatic

Gangtok: Another five persons tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday taking the total number of cases in the state to 67, including 63 active cases.

Of the five new positive cases, three were tested at NBMCH in North Bengal as part of the backlog. The two other samples tested positive at the VRDL lab in STNM Hospital.

"5 more Covid-19 cases reported in Sikkim today. 2 from East district & 3 from West district. All of them were in facility quarantine centres & are reported to be asymptomatic. They have been shifted to Covid-19 Isolation ward of STNM Hospital. Total active cases= 63," read a tweet from Sikkim DIPR.

Among the five patients, one is a 33-year-old woman who had travelled from Bihar and was lodged at PNG Senior Secondary School Quarantine Facility. There are three positive cases from the quarantine facility now, including an infant.

Another positive patient is a 32-year-old male who had reserved an SUV from Siliguri to reach Rangpo. He was travelling with a co-passenger and a driver, but both tested negative. Furthermore, the positive patient was housed at Sundar Spa and Resort in Majhitar, in a twin sharing room but his roommate as well has tested negative.

The three other positive patients are from West Sikkim, include two males along with a 33-year-old female. All three patients had come from Siliguri. While the two males were bound for Melli in a SNT bus, the female travelled in taxi vehicle from Siliguri to reach Melli. She had co-passengers from within a family including a child travelling in the taxi with total four commuters.

These three positive patients were bound on a SNT bus from Melli to Tashiding in their designated quarantine facility there. The quarantine facility had 18 inmates, all of the others have tested negative as per contact tracing norms and the facility has been declared as a containment zone. All the patients are being brought to STNM Hospital for treatment.

Of the 36 positive cases from Friday, the State Health Department has identified 12 bus drivers who ferried these passengers to the state. The tests for these suspected cases are underway.

With rising number of cases from South and West Sikkim, State Health Department has identified almost 190 staffers deputed at Melli check post who will all be tested for COVID-19. There samples are being collected and will be tested.

"State Health Department has decided to conduct tests of workers and volunteers at screening centres in the borders on a regular basis with a repeat test every week", informed Dr Pempa Tshering Bhutia, State Health Director General in his daily health bulletin over social media.
