Imphal: Troops of Assam Rifles seized a huge consignment of contraband items and illegal goods smuggled from Myanmar to Moreh town in Tengnoupal district of Manipur in two separate operations amid the COVID-19 lockdown.
Troops of Tengnoupal Battalion of Pallel sector in their routine mobile vehicle check recovered cigarettes, and other items worth lakhs. They were on their way from Moreh town to Imphal.
The smugglers, along with the confiscated goods, were handed over to Tengnoupal police station for further investigation.
The intensive check along the border area is also to maintain the lockdown implemented all across the nation and porous Indo-Myanmar border along the National Highway 102 and to curb the supply of illegal goods.
On June 8, troops of Moreh Battalion deployed at Haolenphai and Govajang in Tengnoupal intercepted and recovered huge quantity of essential items headed to Myanmar.
As per the official, the troops recovered essential commodities worth lakhs stockpiled inside thick vegetation along Indo-Myanmar border with an intent to transport the consignment to Myanmar at night.
