Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday extended monetary reward to the brave woman auto driver Eche Laibi Oinam after she volunteered to drop off a COVID-19 recovered girl to her home in Kamjong district recently.

Singh handed over an amount of Rs 1,10,000 to Eche in recognition for her selfless act and her contribution towards fighting against COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Eche is the auto driver from Pangei who volunteered to help the young girl from Kamjong district after she recovered from COVID-19 and was discharged from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Hospital on May 31.

Singh took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “Glad to honour and hand over a cash reward of Rs 1,10,000 to Smt Laibi Oinam, a auto driver from Pangei who took the trouble to take the discharged girl from JNIMS covering 8 hours journey to Kamjong.”

She truly exemplifies hard work and service above self, he added.

On May 31, a 22-year-old girl Somichon Chithung from Skipe village in Kamjong got discharged from JNIMS COVID-19 Care facility; however, she was completely driven out of choice due to non-availability of ambulance or taxis to be dropped home from the hospital.

With no hesitation or fear of infecting the virus and despite knowing the history of the girl, the brave auto driver drove over 100 km at night along with her husband from Imphal and drop the newly recovered girl at the Kamjong district headquarters.

As per reports, due to foggy climatic condition and rough terrain, it took them at least eight long hours from Imphal to reach Kamjong.
