Mischievous and undisciplined inmates who break quarantine norms will be put in jail warns Manipur CM Biren Singh
Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday says inmates who violate government norms at quarantine centres will be charged under National Disaster Management Act, 2005 and jails.
The stern warning after reports of some inmates blatantly violating guidelines were reported. Singh says mischievous and undisciplined inmates will not be spared and jailed at the designated Sajiwa Central jail in Imphal.
Singh further said that some people at the quarantine centres are not maintaining proper protocol and disobeying the guidelines despite efforts by frontline workers to contain the COVID-19 virus.
CM Singh was inspecting the 100-bed temporary COVID Care Center at UNACCO School at Meitram in Imphal West on Tuesday.
The chief minister also cited a recent example in Churachandpur district where inmates were caught partying. Similarly, some inmates at Waikhom Mani Girls College in Thoubal quarantine centre were seen in groups floating social distancing norms. They even staged a protest resulting in the collapse of the college gate.
With more people Manipur natives returning home from various parts of the country, the state has seen a surge in COVID-19 positive cases.
Currently, the state has 304 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus.
The total active cases in Manipur has increased to 243 and 64 have recovered.
