Aizawl: Mizoram would be placed under complete lockdown for two weeks starting from Monday midnight following a spike in novel coronavrius case, an official of state health department said on Monday.

The Northeastern state on Monday reported eight new confirmed Covid-19 positive cases, taking the tally to 42.

A consultative meeting of concerned ministers, doctor associations, churches, NGOs, local councils and village councils, chaired by chief minister Zoramthanga on Monday, unanimously decided to impose state-wide total lockdown for two weeks period till June 22 to contain the rapidly increasing Covid-19 cases in the state, official sources said.

However, area-wise moderation would be invoked subject to gravity of Covid-19 spread or number of cases and essentiality of the area, sources said.

The meeting agreed to limit home quarantine facility to those persons with exceptional cases, official sources added.

It further decided to increase the quarantine period from the existing 14 days to 21 days, it said.

The state-level task force on Covid-19 or state executive committee of state disaster management authority will prepare fresh guideline for the total lockdown, which will be issued on Monday night, it added.

Zoramthanga informed the meeting that Mizoram like rest of the world is facing critical time due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus.

He said that complete lockdown with area-wise moderation was essential to contain the virus as there were instances of violation of present lockdown rules in many areas, which might lead to community spread.

“The total lockdown will be imposed in strict manner in all cities and towns. However, certain areas especially in rural areas will be relaxed depending on the need of the people and essentiality of the area,” he said.

He said that the government would conduct a sample test on as many returnees as possible with the help of RT-PCR machines.

Mizoram on Monday reported eight new positive cases, taking the tally from 1 to 42 in just a week.
