Assam conducts over 55,000 COVID-19 tests so far, beats Kerala

Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulates all behind-the-curtain players who enabled Assam to reach remarkable feat of conducting 55,000 COVID-19 tests so far

Guwahati: Assam has so far conducted 55,862 COVID-19 tests, which is higher than Kerala, one of the most medically advanced states in India, which has conducted 52,771 tests, informed health Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday morning.

"In a strong testimony to excellent teamwork and our steely resolve to do the best in a crisis like #COVID19, I am humbled to share that #Assam has carried out 55862 tests so far. This is higher than Kerala's (52771), a state known for its healthcare excellence," the minister wrote on Twitter.

When a continuous rise in COVID-19 cases has cast a pall of gloom over Assam, this news calls for a reason to rejoice as it bears witness to the massive improvement in Assam healthcare infrastructure in the purview of a worldwide pandemic like coronavirus.

Sharing the news, Sarma congratulated all the behind-the-curtain players who have enabled Assam to reach the remarkable feat. He wrote, "My congratulations to behind-the-curtain #COVIDHeroes - our lab technicians, scientists, microbiology faculty of medical colleges, & team RMRC Lahowal who make extraordinary efforts to make this happen. And most certainly kudos to our dedicated teams from #HealthDept."

He also shared the breakup on the number of tests conducted across the 7 ICMR accredited laboratories in the state:

  • Jorhat Medical College & Hospital- 6,334
  • Silchar Medical College & Hospital- 5,140
  • Gauhati Medical College & Hospital- 15,807
  • Assam Medical College & Hospital- 2,502
  • Tezpur Medical College & Hospital- 6,716
  • Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College & Hospital- 12, 096
  • Regional Medical Research Centre- 7,267

Assam has so far reported 350 cases, of which 286 are active, 57 have recovered, four deaths and three have migrated to other states.
