Moderna COVID-19 vaccine trial reports 1st positive sign in humans
New Delhi: The coronavirus vaccine developed by Moderna Inc was recently tested on a small group of healthy volunteers in United States. The initial data collected from the test showed positive results in producing protective antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The data collected from samples of eight volunteers who took part in a 45-subject safety trial that started in March showed promising results of the vaccine in them.
The COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna is one of 100 vaccines currently under research and development to protect against coronavirus. As per the test results, the vaccine was safe on humans and all of the test subjects produced antibodies against coronavirus.
"These are significant findings but it is a Phase 1 clinical trial that only included eight people. It was designed for safety. Not for efficacy,” said Dr Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.
The early data released by Moderna shows signs of hope in the race to develop a vaccine to defat the coronavirus that has spread around the globe and has affected majority of the countries around the world.
