Imphal: Forty-two days after Manipur reported its last COVID-19 case, a 31-year man from Manipur's Imphal East district tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Thursday evening. With this, the total number of positive cases has gone up to three in the state.

As per sources, the latest patient, a resident of Imphal East district, had returned from Mumbai via Jiribam on Wednesday in a hired vehicle. He was kept in quarantine centre.

His sample was tested on Thursday at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal, where it was found to be positive for COVID-19.

According to sources, the man had returned from Mumbai where his father was treated for cancer. Unfortunately, his 48-year-old mother succumbed to COVID-19 in Mumbai last week.

The man will be immediately admitted at the isolation ward of JNIMS hospital, said one of the doctors at the facility.

The fresh case for COVID-19 was reported exactly 42 days after a 65-year-old man from Lilong, who was part of the Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Nizamudding Markaz in Delhi, had tested positive for the virus on April 2. He was, however, discharged on April 12.

The state’s first case of COVID-19 was reported on March 24 when a 23-year-old woman with a travel history to the UK tested positive for the virus.

However, she was declared free from home surveillance on April 27, as per protocol, after she tested negative for the novel coronavirus for the fourth time.

This was informed by chief minister N Biren Singh on his Twitter handle.

“Good to share that the 1st COVID-19 patient from Manipur Miss Vimi is now free from surveillance, as per protocol, as her test result is found negative for the fourth time today,” CM Biren Singh tweeted.

Meanwhile, the state has started bringing back the stranded persons from metro cities. A total of 1,141 passengers have reached Imphal from Chennai by a special train on Wednesday. Another train carrying 1,188 passengers are en route to the state from Punjab and will be arrive in the state on Friday.

Meanwhile, as part of the state's massive evacuation exercise, as many as 1,450 passengers have started their journey by another train from Bengaluru on Thursday evening at 7 pm, as per reports.
