Lockdown: Assam announces measures to make up for academic loss

Assam govt declares summer vacation from May 1 to May 31, instead of July as was the norm, so that it falls during lockdown period, says minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: To cover up the academic loss, Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared summer holidays from May 1 to May 31 for schools so that this period gets adjusted in the lockdown period.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Thursday, the minister said that even if the lockdown is lifted, the schools will be shut till May 31. This is against summer vacation which used to fall in July earlier.

Further, he informed that the state is mulling to change the academic year from January-December for Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) schools to April-March. He said that if for this academic year the new system is implemented, then the academic classes lost can be covered. Further, if April-March academic session is put in place, then it will synchronise the state's academic session with that of the rest of the country.

Considering the future of those students in the higher secondary second year, Sarma said that irrespective of the lockdown, classes will resume for them, and the state will work out on the modalities.

He said that if students are out of town, then flexible option will be available, and they will be able to attend classes in their local college.

Further, he announced that SEBA is preparing to declare the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) aka Class X results by June end.

Mark sheets will be given digitally and students can take admission on the basis of the digital mark sheet, said the education minister. Also, college admission procedure also will be done online.

Lastly, Sarma said that since it is important for research scholars to use college or university laboratory to continue their research work. therefore, research scholars, especially science research scholars, are allowed to visit and continue their work even if the college or university is closed.
