Guwahati: Assam government on Thursday started rapid antibody test for residents of Spanish Garden apartments, a containment zone on Zoo Road in Guwahati. This comes after Indian Council of Medical and Research (ICMR) on Tuesday directed all the states to stop using the new rapid test kits for coronavirus for two days, and then on Wednesday issued a protocol for using such tests to all states.

Taking to Twitter, health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "After final nod from @ICMRDELHI, we've started Rapid Antibody tests for #COVID19 from Spanish Garden - a containment zone. GoI has given 9600 Rapid Antibody test kits for IgM/IgG to Coronavirus. Test is non-confirmatory yet useful for mass surveillance. Gives results in 15 mints."

Earlier, during a press meet, the health minister had informed that the state had received 9,600 test kits from the Centre on Monday. These kits substantially cut down the testing time from 6 hours to 15 minutes.

He said that 50 such kits will be given at Spanish Garden apartments for testing, another 25 will be given for Athgaon Kabaristan, another containment zone in Guwahati, and 250 in Lahorighat. The remaining kits will be distributed to different medical and civil hospitals.
