Guwahati: In the view of the COVID-19 epidemic, Assam government has directed all private schools to waive 50% of their monthly fees for the month of April to give relief to parents, informed education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati, Sarma said that after consideration with the chief minister it has been decided that all private schools will charge only 50% of the fees for the month of April. This will be applied across the board till Class XII. If fees have already been paid, it will to be adjusted in the month of May, he added.

Also, no school will be allowed to hike their fees without taking prior permission of the government, informed Sarma, adding that schools violating the order will be shut down under the Disaster Management Act.

Another decision take by the education department is that private schools cannot cut the salary of their teaching and non-teaching staff.

He said that if the lockdown continues till May 30, then there will be a 52-day loss in the academic year, excluding holidays. This can be made up by keeping the school working on all Saturdays, curtailing the number of declared holidays and reducing summer holidays. If need be, they can even remain open on Sunday, Sarma added.
