After Meghalaya recorded its 1st COVID-19 case, Bethany Hospital was immediately sealed off; a nurse found a heartwarming way to weather the storm by singing her heart out; video winning hearts
Shillong: Unaware of what is happening outside Bethany Hospital in Shillong and with patients and medical staff clueless as to how long they would be asked to remain inside, a nurse found a heart-warming way to weather the storm by singing her heart out with a prayer to help everyone amid the COVID-19 crisis.
Immediately after Meghalaya recorded its first positive COVID-19 case on Monday, the state government sealed Bethany Hospital in Shillong and Nongpoh, besides areas around the medical institution in Shillong. Families of the staff and patients at the hospital were left traumatised.
In a video that is now winning hearts on social media, Bethany Hospital nurse Gwen Zoelie is seen taking a small break and refreshing herself by singing The Prayer. Her friend, Beckie Fanai, who posted the video, wrote, “Bethany hospital nurse.... Sister Gwen Zoelie has been in the hospital since Monday..not able to go home but selflessly taking care of the patients who have been sealed in the hospital. Here she is taking a small break and refreshing herself by singing "The prayer". Lets all be United in praying for all our frontline workers [sic].”
While speaking with EastMojo, Zoelie said that staying calm and following safety precautions were some of the things that she followed and which helped her to weather the storm so far.
When asked about Dr John L Sailo Ryntathiang, Meghalaya’s 1st COVID-19 patient who died on Wednesday morning, she said, “It saddens me to see a person with such a beautiful soul depart away, even heartbreaking for the Bethany family to even face the truth.”
Zoelie said that when the news broke about Dr Sailo testing positive, they were bombarded with calls and messages on Monday night.
“We remained calm and gave proper instructions to everyone not to panic, follow the safety precautions and stay positive. Being a health worker, if we cannot display such calmness, we cause our loved ones and the public to panic too. Mentally, we were all stressed out too but we sat down together and prayed to God to strengthen us physically and spiritually to deal with this situation,” said Zoelie.
She further added that the song she sung was not for any publicity stunt but it was a prayer song that she came across her playlist and just wanted to sing her heart out that day with a heavy heart for God to help them.
Asked if she had a message for the people out there, Zoelie said, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the government, NGOs, voluntary workers, police department, SMB , all the partakers of the funeral who tackled the situation with utmost precaution and others who I might fail to mention here. Your kind help to our hospital will be forever remembered. Please stay home, stay safe for the sake of all humanity. God bless.”
Meanwhile, the government informed that two more cases were reported on Thursday and were family members of the first patient, taking the state’s total cases to nine, including one death. The government also informed that none of the other doctors, staff or in-patients at Bethany Hospital tested positive so far.
The government also informed that all doctors and staff of Bethany Hospital, Shillong who have tested negative are being kept in various quarantine facilities across the city. They will continue to stay at these quarantine facilities for another two weeks after which they can go home. If they develop symptoms during this period, they will be re-tested, officials said.
