Shillong: A day after residents of Jhalupara and Nongpoh in Meghalaya disallowed the body of Dr John L Sailo Ryntathiang, Meghalaya’s 1st COVID-19 patient who died earlier on Wednesday, to be cremated and later buried at Nongpoh, several religious groups and communities came forward to carry out his last rites.

On Wednesday evening, the Meghalaya government was finally able to make arrangements for the doctor's final journey after the assurance from the religious groups and communities.

Dr Sailo's mortal remains will be laid to rest at Riatsamthiah Presbyterian Church cemetary at Lawmali on Thursday.

The grave was dug up on Wednesday evening but due to complications, a JCB was needed to complete the procedure. However, preparations for the burial have now been completed and the arrival of the body is awaited till the filing of this story.

On Wednesday evening, residents of Jhalupara in Meghalaya capital Shillong gathered in the locality to stop the cremation of the renowned doctor and director of Bethany Hospital.

Residents of Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi district also formed a resolution and decided not to allow the burial.

Residents were devastated to hear about this development. Some, like the leaders of Mawryngkneng village, even offered a place to cremate the mortal remains of Dr Sailo.

Meghalaya Artist Rudy Wallang took to social media, disappointed with the residents disallowing the cremation and burial. His message read, “Yesterday was one of the worst days of my life as a 'proud' resident of this Beautiful place called Shillong... I realized that there is nothing to be proud of with regards to the behaviour of those selfish and ignorant human beings and residents of Shillong and Nongpoh who denied a good man a respectful burial. Especially when his own family couldn't be with him.”
