Shillong: Meghalaya health minister AL Hek on Monday informed that if the need arises to transfer non-COVID-19 patients from Civil Hospital to private hospitals, the government will bear their expenses under the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS).

“We have decided that until there are no positive COVID-19 cases, we will not transfer the patients to the private hospital. The moment we receive a single positive COVID-19 case hospitalised at Civil Hospital, then only we will shift all the patients to different private hospitals in the state,” informed Hek.

He also added that all the expenditure incurred during the treatment for all the patients will be taken care by the government under the MHIS. Even migrant labourers, students stranded in the state not entitled to MHIS will also be given the same service, added Hek.

He said that Shillong Civil Hospital has prepared 200 beds dedicated to the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Tura Civil hospital will set up 80-100 beds, he added.

The non-operational cancer wing of Shillong Civil Hospital has now been used for Corona Care Centre with accommodation of 40 beds to be made operational.

Hek informed that a meeting was held with all the authorities for their cooperation. Private hospitals like Robert Hospital, Woodland Hospital, Bethany Hospital, Nazareth Hospital, Children Hospital, Supercare Hospital, BSF and Army Hospital were some of them.

Hek reiterated that till Monday, Meghalaya is still free from any COVID-19 positive cases.
