Several districts order closure of grocery shops & vegetable vendors till April 12; however, medical stores, milk booths and newspaper hawkers exempt from restriction
Imphal: In a move to intensify the containment process of COVID-19 in Manipur, most districts in the state have ordered closure of all types of shops, including grocery outlets and vegetable vendors till April 12 with immediate effect.
However, medical stores, milk booths and distribution of newspapers have been exempted from the restriction.
So far, the districts which have issued the order include Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Pherzawl, Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Churachandpur.
The order was issued on Sunday on the instruction given by chief secretary J Suresh Babu to intensify the containment measures against the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
Any violators found during the strictly enforced lockdown and curfew shall attract penal provisions under Section 51 of Disaster Management Act, 2005 and any other appropriate Act(s), the order said.
Earlier, shops selling essential items, including vegetable vendors, were allowed to open on alternate days to avoid mass gatherings and to exercise proper social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Since the nationwide lockdown was enforced, Manipur Police have detained as many as 546 violators along with 473 vehicles. The violators were produced before the magistrate and fine of Rs 53,900 collected so far, as per reports.
The police department has also appealed residents to follow the advisory and remain indoors for their own safety and that of the public from the infectious disease.
