Assam: GMC donates 1-day salary of all staff to fight COVID-19 

A cheque of Rs 19,48,915 totaling to a day’s salary of all officers, staff and workers of Guwahati Municipal Corporation handed over to CM as COVID-19 relief

Guwahati: To aid in times of coronavirus crisis, Guwahati Municipal corporation (GMC) donated Rs 19,48,915, that is, a day’s salary of all its officers, staff and workers to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday.

GMC commissioner Devajyoti Hazarika along with Chandan Sharma, covenor of 4 Guwahati Municipal Workers Union, handed over the cheque to the CM.

People from all walks of life have been donating money and materials to help the state and the nation during the 21-day national lockdown to curb coronavirus.

So far, 2,069 cases have been detected in India with 53 deaths. In Assam, in a span of just two days, from 0 cases, the number of confirmed cases rose to 16.

Also, Assam governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi also donated a month's salary to CM's relief fund. Taking to Twitter, he said, "Contributed my one month’s gross salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support the Assam government’s relief operations against the Coronavirus outbreak."

He appealed others as well to come forward and donate as much as they can.
