Guwahati: Indian Railways has decided to provide bulk cooked food with paper plates to needy people from the locations where they have base kitchens of IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation), said a press release from NF Railway. This comes at a time when India is currently under a 21-day national lockdown.
IRCTC has base kitchens in stations like Katihar, Rajendranagar, Sealdah, Howrah, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Kanpur, New Delhi, Paharganj, CSMT, Pune, Sholapur, Bhusawal, Itarsi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai Central, Khurdha Road, Balasore, Vijaywada, Bangalore, Hubli, Thiruvananthapuram, Chengalpattu, Katpadi, Mangalore.
As on Sunday, IRCTC supplied 11,030 lunch meals to needy people, migrant labourers, few old-age homes and others across the country with the help of RPF and local NGOs.
Such distribution will be undertaken by RPF personnel, railway authorities and NGOs, volunteers if needed. While delivering the food, social distancing and hygiene is being observed, said the release.
It added that Indian Railways and IRCTC is ready to meet any higher demand to provide food to needy in the times of lockdown. It has adequate stocks of food grains and other raw material are being maintained.
Moreover, to ensure an uninterrupted supply chain of goods and essential commodities railways is running the services of parcel trains. The provision of parcel trains and rapid transportation of goods will bolster the efficiency of supply chains during the lock down period. It will help in movement of essential items such as dairy products, medical equipment and medicines, groceries, edible oil and other necessary items. These parcel trains are in addition to normal freight trains that are being run for carriage of food-grains and POL items.
Parcel specials will run on 20 routes, including New Delhi–Guwahati, Moga-Changsari, Kalyan-Guwahati, Shalimar-New Guwahati, the release added.
