Aizawl: The Mizoram government has begun freeing up the beds at state’s lone Zoram Medical College (ZMC) and state referral hospital at Falkawn near Aizawl to make rooms for COVID-19 patients, an official of the state health department said on Thursday.

Mizoram reported its first case of coronavirus on Wednesday after a 50- year-old pastor tested positive.

He has travel history to Amsterdam and had returned to Aizawl on March 16. He was sent to isolation ward in ZMC along with his wife and two children on Tuesday night.

The state government recently approved ZMC as treatment and isolation centre for coronavirus infected patients. ZMC director T Lalhmangaihi said that the government has closed all OPDs in the college ever-since the government declared it for treatment and isolation centre.

She said that about 98 patients are being shifted to Aizawl civil hospital and private hospitals to make room for covid-19 patients. The exercise began on Wednesday and is likely to be completed by Friday, she said. She said that a seven-bedded Intensive Care Unit at ZMC has also been vacated.

According to the director, the recently detected COVID-19 patient is improving and is in stable condition. She said that doctors and health workers treating the patients were well equipped with personnel protective equipment and were being quarantined at special ward at ZMC.

State nodal officer of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and epidemiologist Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma said that 10 samples were sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday.

He said that the state government has so far received results of 16 samples of which 15 have tested negative.
