COVID-19: Tripura urban bodies to supply food to homeless in state

Toll-free number ‘102’ launched by chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb to take care of all emergency ambulance services, including COVID-19 cases in state

Agartala: For the benefit of the poor and homeless people residing in the urban areas in Tripura, the director, Urban Development (UD) on Wednesday asked the self-help groups (SHGs) or public service foundations to provide cooked food in the urban localities of the state.

UD director Shailesh Kumar Yadav in an official order asked all the 20 municipal commissioners, executive officers and chief executive officers to set up kitchens and prepare food like ‘khichdi’ at a single location.

“Any good ALF of SHG under DAY-National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) may be deployed for cooking and making food packets. Distribution of food packets to be urban poor twice daily may be done by using one or more dedicated vehicles by the respective urban local bodies,” the order said.

The staff engaged in the distribution of the food would be geared with gloves and hand sanitizers. Instructions to ensure that there is no gathering during the distribution process was also made by the director in his order.

The food and civil supplies department has been asked to supply rice and dal (pulses) to all district authorities for emergency food supply in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, health secretary Debashish Basu speaking at a press conference said that control rooms in all eight districts have been set up for coordination and sharing information regarding coronavirus aka (COVID-19) related issues.

An toll-free number ‘102’ was also launched on Wednesday by chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb that would look after all emergency ambulance services in state.

Flagging off 50 such ambulances on Wednesday morning, Deb wrote on his Facebook page, “Flagged off 50 emergency life support ambulances at Agartala today which will be functional throughout the state 24*7. These life support ambulances are dedicated to the 37 lakh people of Tripura. Dial 102 in case of an emergency for immediate assistance.”

He also wrote, “Our government has spent approximately Rs 50 Cr for this project. This is first time in Tripura that such initiative has been taken by the state government. Also, Tripura become the second state in North East which has such facilities.”

The chief minister also donated a month’s salary to the chief minister’s relief fund and urged all the ministers and MLAs to donate 15 days of their salaries to fund the noble cause.

Tripura High Court Justice Arindam Lodh too donated Rs 1 lakh to the chief minister’s relief fund on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the health department has kept over 948 persons in home quarantine having recent travel history to COVID-19 affected countries.
