Guwahati: In the wake of coronavirus, India has entered into complete lockdown mode from Wednesday, and most of us are in the comfort of our homes. However, many essential services workers like healthcare and medical professionals who are in the line of fire, discharging their duties for the greater welfare of society, are now facing another threat, not from the virus but from harassment.

There have been several reports of alleged discrimination where healthcare professionals have been stranded on roads. They have been evicted from rented homes in the fear that they are infected with the deadly virus.

Not just the professionals, their family members are also being harassed by their landlords, neighbours and the likes claiming that they are infected and posing a threat to others. And this is quite unexpected as merely 3 days before, the entire nation was standing on their balcony, terrace clapping their hands expressing gratitude to the essential service workers.

In an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, representatives of the medical fraternity apprised him of the happenings, requesting for a directive in this regard.

These have not been isolated incidents towards the medical and healthcare professionals. Workers of Air India and IndiGo have also faced similar instances of being ostracised from their communities due to their travel history in wake of the outbreak of the deadly disease.
