Guwahati: In a new low of racial discrimination against people hailing from Northeast India, a Manipuri woman was spat on and called "coronavirus" in North Campus area of Delhi on Sunday.

The incident took place when the woman was on her way to Vijaynagar area when a man on a two-wheeler abused her by calling her 'coronavirus'. He spat chewing tobacco on her T-shirt as seen in a picture of the girl which has now gone viral.

This is not an isolated incident, ever since the outbreak of the novel virus in China, people with Mongoloid features are heckled and blatantly called 'coronavirus.'

Delhi Police took cognizance of the matter and registered a case under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code against a man.

New Delhi-based advocate and activist Alana Golmei highlighted the issue on Twitter. She wrote, "Another racist attack on NE girl reported just now in North Campus calling her Coronavirus and spitting on her. Are the concerned authorities waiting for untoward situation to happen again? Incident like Nido Tania should not happen again to any of our NE boys and girls."

As reported earlier by EastMojo, Golmei had written to Satyendra Garg, joint secretary (NE), Chairman, Monitoring Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs (NE Division) throwing light on such incidents and appealing to come out with a strong advisory to all the concerned institutions, offices and universities.
