Guwahati: Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, ace sprinter Hima Das attended a virtual conference with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, on Friday. She attended the meeting held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) indoor stadium in Guwahati. The online event was also attended by Karnan Malleswari, weightlifting legend and the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics.

Athletes from Northeast India and officials from SAI came together to cheer for the Indian contingent in the Olympics. The event was graced by the presence of International athletes like Kalpana Choudhury, Pwilao Basumatary, Minu Basumatary, Bhagyavati Kachati, Ankushita Boro, Tumi Gogoi, Tunlai Narzary and archer Prashant Nath.

“Today is a cheerful day for celebrating the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics. We all, Arjun awardees, Olympians, the international players and athletes under the Sports Authority of India, are here in Guwahati. We are very cheerful for the opening ceremony, which is to be held very shortly, “ said Satish K. Sarhadi, Regional Director of SAI Guwahati.

“We are very happy that Lovlina is participating in the Olympics. We are hopeful and play to the Almighty that Lovlina comes back with a medal. I am a boxer myself, and I hope that the players from Northeast India come back with gold medals. I was with Mary Kom for around ten years. I have played with Mary Kom before but lost due to a few points,“ said Kalpana Choudhury, gold medalist and Best Boxer in AIBA 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship held in Guwahati.

“We are very hopeful that Lovlina will play very well and will win a medal on behalf of Assam. My discipline is archery. I am hoping for at least two medals in archery,” said Prashant Nath, Gold Medalist in the 1st Asian Grandprix.

The Tokyo Olympics that began on Friday will continue till August 8.
