Aaranyak, in partnership with the UK-based David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF), organised two editions of its “Rhino Goes to School” programme to promote wildlife conservation among students living near Kaziranga National Park.

The awareness drives were held at Dukhutimukh Higher Secondary School and Amguri ME School, with support from the Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve Authority.

At Dukhutimukh Higher Secondary School, nearly 250 students attended an interactive session on Greater one-horned rhino conservation and local biodiversity led by Arif Hussain, Senior Manager of Aaranyak’s Rhino Research and Conservation Division.

The programme included a wildlife-themed quiz that encouraged students to engage actively with conservation issues. School Principal Sashi Gogoi, along with Aaranyak members Ivan Loying and Akash Morang, were present at the event.

At Amguri ME School in Burhapahar, around 90 students participated in a similar session featuring a presentation on biodiversity, an open quiz and an environmental game. Arif Hussain served as the resource person here as well. Officers from the Burhapahar Range — Champa Doley and Kuldeep Bania — along with Eco Development Committee president Mangal Ingti, interacted with students on local biodiversity concerns. Teachers and support staff from the school were also in attendance.

The outreach initiative aims to inspire young learners living in the Kaziranga landscape to become future custodians of Assam’s wildlife.
