Silchar: In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, Assam police has seized ganja worth Rs 1.35 crore in two separate operations in Assam’s Karimganj district.

As per reports, four persons have been apprehended during the operations.

According to sources, police intercepted a vehicle at Churaibari, about 107 km from Silchar town on Saturday evening, and seized around 555 kilograms of ganja that were concealed in 44 packets.

The market value of the seized contraband is around Rs 55 lakh. The vehicle was coming from Tripura, the sources said.

Niranjan Das, in-charge of Churaibari police watch post, said that a case had been registered regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter and hailed the Assam Police for its efforts in war against drugs. The chief minister said Karimganj Police has seized 555 kg of Ganja at Churaibari, Karimganj. Two accused, residents of two neighbouring states, have been apprehended. Compliments to Assam Police for its continued efforts, Sarma said.

In another incident, customs officials seized ganja worth Rs 80 lakh from Karimganj’s Mobarakpur, around 59 km from Silchar, on Thursday. The officials, based on a tip-off, followed a vehicle from Nilambazar and intercepted the vehicle at Mobarakpur.

During search operation, police recovered 35 packets of ganja from the vehicle. Two drivers, who hail from northern India, were also apprehended. The market value of the seized ganja is estimated to be around Rs 80 lakh.

Karimganj police, which is to receive the ganja consignment from customs officials, however, did not divulge any details concerning the seizure. 

Karimganj district has been witnessing a number of incidents related to seizures of contraband in the past few months. 

Ganja worth Rs 1.20 crore was seized from a lorry and two men were also arrested in Churaibari on the night of May 16. On April 18, police seized ganja worth Rs 50,000 from two buses in Churaibari and arrested one person.
