SILCHAR: Police seized cough syrup valued at around Rs 35 lakh from a vehicle and arrested its driver from Churaibari in Assam’s Karimganj district near the Assam-Tripura inter-state border on Monday night.
Sources said the cough syrup was seized during a routine check near Churaibari police checkpost, about 110 km from Silchar, at about 9 pm on Monday night. A vehicle (AS-01 MC-0386), which was going to Agartala, Tripura from Guwahati, was stopped near the watchpost by cops and searched.
Authorities found and seized at least 10,155 bottles of cough syrup, which were about to be smuggled to the neighbouring state of Tripura, hidden inside 97 bags in the vehicle.
The driver, identified as Aditya Rabha (45) who hails from Nalapara, Boko in Kamrup district, has been arrested and being questioned by the police.
An official at Churaibari police watch post said the market value of the seized cough syrup is estimated at about Rs. 35 lakh.
It may be mentioned that Barak Valley has witnessed seizures of various illegal items in the past few days. Heroin valued at around Rs. 3 crore was seized from a car in Panchgram in Hailakandi district on Monday.
A team of cops, based on a tip-off, conducted an operation near a petrol pump in Panchgram, about 27 km from Silchar, and seized over three kilograms of heroin from an Alto car. It was suspected that the drugs were brought from Mizoram and about to be smuggled to Meghalaya.
Nearly 20,000 Yaba tablets were also seized from the car. A few men, who were inside the car, fled away after seeing the cops. The seized drugs were taken to Panchgram police station.
Yaba tablets worth Rs. 30 lakh were seized and two men apprehended in Patharkandi in Karimganj district on Saturday. Based on specific information, police laid a trap on National Highway-8 (Assam-Tripura road) in Patharkandi, about 76 km from Silchar, in the wee hours of Saturday and seized Yaba tablets from two men’s possession.
The persons identified as Abdul Lais and Abdul Khayar, who were riding on a two-wheeler (MZ-01 L-8062), were arrested. Lais and Khayar, who hail from Patharkandi, were produced before a court in Karimganj on Monday and sent to judicial custody.
In another major seizure of drugs in Barak Valley, heroin valued at about Rs. 18 crore was seized and four men arrested from Ishancherra under Ramakrishnanagar police station in Karimganj district on April 7.
With the objective of reducing crimes including smuggling of drugs, Silchar BJP MP Rajdeep Roy had last month placed a proposal in Parliament for the setting up of an intelligence bureau office in Barak Valley under the supervision of an IPS officer and drew the Union home ministry’s attention.
Following his visit to Silchar from New Delhi after the Parliament’s session, Rajdeep held a press conference in which he said about placing the proposal. He also said, “Barak Valley has international borders (with Bangladesh) and crimes like illegal drug sale and human trafficking have increased here over the years. Setting up an IB office will help in reducing crimes.”
