President Ram Nath Kovind is scheduled to visit Assam for 3 days from February 25. State capital Guwahati is undergoing a beautification process to welcome the President with many cleaning, repairing, and decorating drives in the city. But will this last?

EastMojo spoke to Guwahati residents and also the workers employed for the job as to what they think about it.

On being questioned about how they felt about the beautification of the city before the President’s arrival, Partha Sonowal said, “If Prime Minister or President visits then the road from here to Kalakhetra, Panjabari is repaired or constructed. But the Botahguli road is in a bad condition and never gets repaired. Till the Satgaon Army camp, the road is being constructed. But the Botahguli road never gets repaired. Here, they just keep colouring. Be it a meeting or whatever, only this area gets painted every time.”

Speaking on similar lines, Raghav Sharma said, “If an important person comes, only then do the roads or railings or road bridges become clean. If later someone spits also, no one pays any heed. It is not for the general public but only for the important people.”

Huzur Ali, one of the workers who were engaged in the cleaning activity, when asked about cleaning and painting the dividers, said, “I don’t know much about it.
The contractor brought us, so we are doing it.”
