Guwahati: Several top Assam Police officials have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

As per reports, senior police officers Hiren Nath (ADGP), Satyaraj Hazarika (DIG), Dhananjay P. Ghanawat (SP, Sonitpur district), Rajen Singh (SP, Baksa district), Mohanlal Meena (SP, Sadiya district), VV Rakesh Reddy (SP, Goalpara district), and CID SP Pranabjyoti Goswami have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Dr Naba Jyoti Gogoi, SDM&HO (HQ) and DSO, Dibrugarh district, also tested positive.

Santanu Dutta, the additional SP of Majuli, too has tested positive.

All these officials attended the two-day long SP conference at Duliajan recently, which was also attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Assam has witnessed a spike in COVID-19 cases since January 1. The state’s single-day COVID-19 cases came down for the first time in nine days, with the detection of 988 fresh infections on Sunday. Worryingly, however, the positivity rate soared by nearly double to 6.48 per cent, the National Health Mission (NHM) said.

The state had logged 1,254 new cases with a positivity rate of 3.73 per cent after testing 33,609 samples for COVID-19 on Saturday. Of the total number recorded on Sunday, Kamrup Metro recorded 490 of the total 988 cases alone.

Importantly, however, there were no reports of new Omicron cases in the state.
