Guwahati: Much on the lines UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa appears to be preparing himself for embarking on the name changing spree in the state.
The BJP-ruled Assam will launch a government portal for seeking suggestions, proposals from the citizens on the issue of the name change of village, street, and other places. The portal will be opened for citizens for the next two months.
Based on the suggestions received from citizens, the deputy commissioner of each district will decide on the name change of the place.
Notably, after assuming power, the BJP-led government dropped the name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi from the Orang National Park. The park is one of the seven national parks and three Rhino Habitats.
“The decision to restore the original name of Orang National Park was taken following requests from the Adivasi groups in the state,” the government had reasoned out then.
In fact, the erstwhile Tarun Gogoi led Congress government also changed the name of Assam to Asom as the as the word “Assam” does not figure in the Assamese dictionary.
