A fake twitter post bearing the name and picture of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma is doing the rounds on social media. The tweet, with several spelling errors, raises alarm over the rising number of COVID-19 cases and adds that the Education department will shut schools and colleges.

“As per covid-19 cases are increasing in Assam very fast. On 31st October it cross 300+ possitive cases . So the Education department and the government decided to closed school’s and collage’s from 20th November. #staysafe,” reads the misleading tweet posted on November 1.

Clarifying the same and asking people to stay alert and vigilant, the CM tweeted, ” A FAKE tweet bearing my name is circulating saying that since cases of #COVID19 have gone up schools & colleges are being closed down from Nov20. This is WRONG & should not be heeded to. Stay off misinformation and fake news!”

The minister further advised Assam police to take note of the same and take action against those spreading such rumours.

Schools and colleges began reopening from September in a phased manner across Assam after being shut for months due to the second wave of COVID-19.
