Doctors of Excelcare Hospitals in GUwahati performed a challenging procedure on a 72-year old male patient who has been suffering from Carotid Artery Disease

Guwahati: In a rare medical feat, doctors of Guwahati’s Excelcare Hospitals performed a challenging procedure on a 72-year old male from Guwahati who has been suffering from Carotid Artery Disease.

The procedure was performed by senior interventional radiologist Maj Gen Dr Kamal Pathak and assisted by interventional cardiologists Dr Amitava Misra and Dr Dhanjit Nath.

This type of procedure is rarely performed in the Northeast.

Maj Gen Dr Kamal Pathak explained that the patient presented with multiple problems and upon investigation it was found that there was total occlusion (blockage) of the right internal carotid artery with ectasia (expansion) of the left common carotid and internal carotid artery. Due to this, there was bilateral anterior circulation of the brain only from the left side, the doctor said.

“The patient was treated by Carotid Artery Stenting. Two stents were placed (stent within a stent) which would act like a flow diverter and protect the dilated artery from rupture. The patient made good recovery and was stable at the time of discharge,” he said.

“The case was very challenging as earlier the patient had presented with ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome) with heart failure. The patient then underwent a Left Main Coronary Artery Stenting at Excelcare Hospitals, which in itself is a challenging procedure,” Dr Amitava Misra said.

“To make things more complex, the patient was suffering from CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) and was on maintenance dialysis.”

The doctor added that the patient also had a history of repeated Transient Ischemic Attacks (a condition similar to a stroke).
