Assam says Mizoram tried to construct bridge in its territory, stopped

Guwahati: The Axom Nagarik Samaj (ANS) on Saturday expressed concern over the recent Assam-Mizoram border violence and the subsequent economic blockade, and requested to withdraw the blockade immediately.

In a press release, the organisation said, “We are greatly disturbed by the recent incident of violence in the Assam-Mizoram border. It is surprising that the state machinery of two states of the same country can indulge in such kind of a clash. It defies all logic and principles of civilised governance.”

Condemning the violence which led to the death of six Assam Police personnel and one civilian, Axom Nagarik Samaj said the situation turning ugly was “a reflection on the Government of India and its inefficiency and indifference in solving the problem. It is a failure on the part of the Centre that it couldn’t stop the escalation of violence at the border between the security forces of two neighbouring states.”

Advocating that the border issue must be resolved through negotiations and that economic blockade was no solution, the organisation has appealed to the people and the government of Assam to withdraw the economic blockade immediately and ensure free flow of supplies to Mizoram.

“Border disputes among the states in the Northeast has become a recurring thing. To resolve it we must view it in its historical perspective and colonial legacy,” it said.
