Tinsukia: In another case of a major drug haul in Assam, Karbi Anglong police seized suspected heroin worth Rs 1 crore, concealed in a Scorpio SUV, during a routine checking in Diphu on Monday, exposing a Dimapur-Manipur link.
Two persons, identified as Aftab Hussain and Sabir Hussain, have been arrested.
Speaking with Eastmojo, Karbi Anglong SP Pushpraj Singh said that during a routine checking on Diphu-Dhansiri road on Monday, a Scorpio SUV with registration number AS-17D-0007 was intercepted.
“On thorough checking, the police team detected a secret chamber within the fuel tank of the vehicle, and recovered 41 soap cases that were concealed in it,” he added.
The recoveries amount to over 532 grams of heroin with an international market value of around Rs 1 crore. “For a week, a drug deal was under our radar. Today, as the shipment left Dimapur for Karimganj, we tracked them and intercepted the vehicle in Diphu and made the recoveries,” Singh said.
Singh added that the involvement of militant group in the drugs trade cannot be ruled out and is part of their investigation.
According to sources, drugs enter Assam through the porous borders of Myanmar (Burma) with Manipur from where it is then sent to Dimpaur. “A few persons arrested in drug-related cases are believed to have revealed before the police that a huge amount goes to militant groups in the name of protection money,” sources added.
Out of the massive drug seizure in Assam, some of the biggest seizures have been made by Karbi Anglong police including contraband worth Rs 7 crore in the month of June.
