Kohima: Tension along the Nagaland-Assam border has once again escalated after police forces from Assam reportedly attempted to establish camps near Vikuto village.

The incident reported on Tuesday comes nearly a month after the recent firing incident involving MLA from Assam’s Mariani constituency Rupjyoti Kurmi‘s visit along the border.

Tuesday’s incident happened under the Tzürangkong range in Mokokchung district bordering Mariani. Videos of the Assam police and Nagaland Police along the border also widely circulated online.

A police source told EastMojo that personnel from the Nagaland Police have been deployed along the areas to prevent the situation from escalating.

At the time of writing this report, the situation is said to be under control.

The source said that incidents, where residents of the state allege land encroachment on both sides, is a common occurrence as the border areas fall under the disputed area belt.

Nagaland-Assam border dispute is sub-judice in the Apex Court and till demarcations are made, border tensions are likely to continue, the source said.

As reported earlier, Nagaland has a 512-km border stretch with Assam. As the border issue is sub judice, the disputed areas are guarded by neutral force.
