Guwahati: Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi has tendered his resignation to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Friday, and is all set to join the ruling BJP.

The fourth time MLA has been expelled from the primary membership of Congress on Friday for ‘anti-party activities’.

Meanwhile, the state Congress has constituted a committee to take stock of the political situation in Mariani LAC in view of Kurmi’s decision to join BJP.

On the reason for resigning, the MLA said, the party prioritises elder leaders only.

He also said that the alliance with AIUDF in the recently held Assam Assembly Election was a mistake, which cost Congress its chance of returning to power.

Kurmi, son of former Congress minister late Rupam Kurmi, is a prominent member of the tea tribe community. He has been elected from the Mariani constituency since 2006.
