Tinsukia: Three people were arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a frontline sanitation worker, who later tested positive for Covid-19, in a remote area under Ghungoor police outpost in Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday evening.

The 32-year-old victim is employed at the RE Nursing Home & Diagnostic Centre.

Talking to this correspondent, the superintendent of Cachar police, BL Meena, said based on the complaint, the police registered a case under relevant IPC sections and arrested three persons.

“The case is under investigation,” he added.

The accused have been identified as Samay Gwala, Kanak Lal Gwala and Mahesh Gwala.

A source said the victim tested positive for COVID-19 before her medical examination. “The trio will also be tested for COVID-19 before being produced before the magistrate.”

According to sources, the incident took place when the victim was returning home. “A known person, staying in the same locality, stopped her and offered a lift. On the way, he took the victim to a remote location where he raped her in the presence of two persons.”

“The other two persons are also from the same locality,” added sources.
