A professor at Assam‘s Dibrugarh University has been removed from his position as chairperson of Centre of Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication on charges of sexual harassment.
Accused Satyakam Borthakur is also a professor at the Assamese department of the university.

A notification issued by the register of Dibrugarh University on Wednesday states that “in view of certain allegations of harassment” the “chairmanship” of Borthakur has been “ceased” and in his place Prof. P.K. Gogoi of the department of Education is appointed as the chairperson of the said department with immediate effect.

Following the order, Prof. Satyakam Borthakur resigned from his position with the Centre of Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication on Saturday.

In February, a female research scholar of the varsity had lodged a complaint before the internal complaints committee (ICC) of Dibrugarh University, accusing Borthakur of sexual harassment. Borthakur was her research supervisor.

Based on the complaint and witness statements by another female research scholar and a female employee, the university authorities ordered him to step down from chairmanship of the said department.
Apart from the said removal, the notification mentions no other actions taken against Borthakur.
