Guwahati: The police on Monday arrested three people, including a constable of Assam Police Battalion (APBn) for their alleged role in the abduction of three employees of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) from Assam’s Sivasagar district on April 21.

The three people arrested were Rahul Mohan and Biraj Chetia of Dibrugarh, and Basant Buragohain, a constable of 25th AP(ONGC)Bn.

Giving a detailed breakup of the arrested people and their involvement in the crime, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta wrote, “Biraj Chetia, S/o Brojen Chetia of Banipur, Dibrugarh, purchased the motorcycle used in the crime for ULFA(I). Rahul Mohan, S/o Lt. Boloram Mohan of Moudumoni, Sepon for rendering logistical support for ferrying the motorcycle to the PO and providing other assistance.”

“Basanta Buragohai, a constable of 25th AP(ONGC) Bn for actively participating in the abduction and for being a part of the entire conspiracy along with two other bad characters apart from the ULFA(I) leaders.”

The DGP added so far, the investigation indicates the involvement of only one police personnel but “anyone found directly or indirectly involved in this case will be seriously dealt with as per law.”

Stating that efforts are underway to find the third victim, Mahanta reiterated Assam Police’s stand that no culprit will be spared.

Three staffers of ONGC — Alakesh Saikia, Mohini Mohan Gogoi and Retul Saikia — were abducted by a group of armed militants on April 21. While two of them — Alakesh Saikia and Mohini Mohan Gogoi — were rescued within 72 hours by a joint team of Army, Assam Rifles, Assam police, Nagaland police and intelligence officials from the jungles of Mon district in Nagaland, search is on for Retul Saikia.

Earlier, a day after the kidnapping took place, Assam police arrested 14 persons for allegedly working as ULFA (I) linkmen.
