With a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in Assam, the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, popularly known as Sarusajai Stadium, has been turned into a COVID Care Centre yet again. The facility will be equipped with around 500 beds, which will be made available for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. So far, around 350 beds have been added and 150 more beds will be placed in the next few days. The facility will have around 35 lavatories for men and around 25 for women.

Speaking to EastMojo, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) district said that priority for COVID Care Centres is given to covered buildings such as the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education and the Rahman Institute Of Nursing And Paramedical Sciences in Sonapur, among several others, before building makeshift centres.

He also added that people arriving at the Guwahati airports and railway station will be tested upon arrival itself and will not be taken to Sarusajai stadium.

As of April 21, Assam has recorded 9,048 COVID-19 active cases, of which, 674 are from Kamrup (M).
