Former Assam chief minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman passed away at the age of 90 after prolonged illness. 

He had been on ventilation at the ICU of Guwahati’s Dispur Hospital for the past many days. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tribute to Dr Barman, who was 91.

“Anguished by the passing away of former Assam CM and senior politician, Shri Bhumidhar Barman. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief: PM @narendramodi

Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state CM Sarbananda Sonowal also tweeted their condolence messages.

“Today we lost a stalwart of Assam politics – former CM and 7-time MLA Late Bhumidhar Barman. I have fond memories of his guidance and affection, starting with my early political career. He leaves behind a rich legacy of good politics & work. We shall miss him. My condolences” tweeted Sarma, a former Congress leader.

“Saddened to learn about the demise of former Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Bhumidhar Barman. My sincere condolences to his bereaved family members and well-wishers. Om shanti” tweeted the Assam CM.

AGP President and state minister Atul Bora too paid his tribute to the two-time CM and 7-time MLA Barman.

“Anguished by the demise of former chief minister and veteran leader Dr. Bhumidhar Barman. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family members and prayers for the departed soul” tweeted Bora.

“Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of former Chief Minister & veteran politician Dr.Bhumidhar Barman. Joining the state in paying my rich tributes to this dedicated leader who contributed immensely towards developmental prospects of the state” tweeted Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Excise, Forest & Environment and Fisheries, Government of Assam.

Dr Harish Patowary, Secretary, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, joined others in paying tribute to Barman, who had been ill for quite some time.

Various units of the National Students Union of India, the student wing of the Congress, also paid tribute to Dr Barman.

Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and President, Anchalik Gana Morcha, Ajit Bhuyan also paid his tribute via Twitter.

BJP MLA from Dhekiajuli, Ashok Singhal also paid his tribute to Barman, who was first elected to the Assam assembly in 1967.
