Plans are afoot to move a “problematic” greater one-horned rhinoceros from the wilds of the Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve to the state zoo in Guwahati. The move is being considered after complaints from park workers, a forest department source said.

Animesh Deka, a forest guard was killed by the rhino on Friday. Deka with two others was on his way to a local market from Teklai Camp of the national park on a motorcycle when the trio came across the rhino, according to reports. The forest guards blank fired to scare the animal. As Deka fell down from the motorcycle, the rhino mauled him, killing the forest guard on the spot.

The 12-year-old rhino is said to have a bullet wound in his leg after it was shot by a forest guard who tried to save himself as the animal charged to attack him in 2018. “This rhino was involved in three deaths in 2018,” the forest department source said.
