At a time when the BJP-led government at the Centre boasts of providing last-mile connectivity and electricity to 2 crores 62 lakh households in the last three years, not much far away from Guwahati’s secretariat is a locality that has been surviving without electricity for over three years.
Locals in Janashimalu near the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary had to come to an understanding with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited to use unbilled electricity until a power transformer is placed in the area.
The story dates back to November 27, 2017, when over 60 houses were demolished during an eviction drive, leaving more than 500 locals of the area without a roof over their heads. Electricity connections, which were also totally cut off for these people, were never restored. These people were evicted for being encroachers, living illegally in the premises of the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.
